Step 4: A Clear Look at Ourselves
“Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.”
April at The Men’s Home focuses on Step 4. This is where the process becomes more deliberate. It’s about taking a structured, honest look at patterns that have shaped how we think and act.
Step 4 is often misunderstood. It’s not about beating yourself up or revisiting the past for the sake of it. It’s about clarity. Looking at resentments, fears, and behaviors on paper removes guesswork. It replaces vague awareness with something concrete.
The Twelve and Twelve describes this step as a process of “fact-finding and fact-facing.” That’s the goal, seeing things as they are, not as we would prefer them to be. Without that, it’s difficult to move forward in a meaningful way.
This step requires effort and consistency, but not perfection. It’s a methodical process of identifying what’s there so it can be addressed in the next steps.
Step 4 doesn’t solve everything. It organizes it.
