Step 7: Humility in Practice

“Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.”

July at The Men’s Home is focused on Step 7. After the work of identifying defects of character and becoming willing to let them go, this step is about humility and action.

Step 7 is simple in wording, but it is not always simple in practice. It asks us to stop relying only on self-will and to ask God, as we understand Him, to remove the shortcomings that continue to get in the way.

The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions describes Step 7 as a change in attitude. Humility becomes the guide. Instead of staying wrapped up in pride, fear, or control, this step points us toward a different way of living.

The Daily Reflections puts it plainly: there are no blanks to fill in. The step says to humbly ask. That does not mean everything changes overnight. It means we become willing to do our part and stop pretending we can remove every shortcoming on our own.

Step 7 is not about perfection. It is about becoming honest enough to ask for help, and willing enough to change.

You can help with our progress, not perfection.
